Republic FC Signs Defender Freddy Kleemann
Republic FC has signed Freddy Kleemann, a 6’4” center back, pending league and federation approval.
“Freddy is a proven commodity in our league and has logged impressive minutes the past two seasons,” said Republic FC President and General Manager Todd Dunivant. “He brings a physical presence to our backline and fits with our style to win the ball back as quickly as possible.”
Kleemann spent the last two seasons with Tampa Bay Rowdies, originally joining in 2023 to play under current Republic FC Head Coach Neill Collins. He became a key defensive piece, making 58 appearances (4,208 minutes) and contributing to 21 shutouts. His defensive stats include 181 clearances, 38 blocks, 48 interceptions, and 39 tackles won, while also ranking seventh among league defenders in aerial duels (155 won).
A California native, Kleemann was selected 11th overall in the 2021 MLS SuperDraft by Austin FC, where he signed for the club’s inaugural season and made three appearances. He also had USL Championship loan stints with Birmingham Legion (2021-22), recording 15 clearances in four matches.
At the University of Washington, Kleemann helped the Huskies win the 2019 Pac-12 Championship, earning conference academic honors. In 2018, he represented the U.S. in the FISU America Games in Brazil, where he and the Huskies won gold.
With size, aerial dominance, and defensive experience, Kleemann strengthens Republic FC’s backline heading into the 2025 USL Championship season.
